Strange thumb nail disorder?

Ever since I was about in the 4th grade my left my left thumb nail has a strange indentation of bumbs and ridges in the middle of it that runs from bottom to top. It grew completley out once but came back shortly and has been there ever since. I am 31 now. My mom had them before but hers grew out. My brother also has them. Its obviously something hereditary but what and can I ever get rid of it?Strange thumb nail disorder?
i believe it is caused by a fungusStrange thumb nail disorder?
It could be a vitamin B deficiency, sometimes it causes ridges in your nail (s) so check that out.

Do i have a nail disease/disorder?

i go to boces for Cosmetology. and were on the nail unit (i wish i had my book with me) but...

my thumbnail is been weird lately. it started like a month ago. but its like warm sometimes. and sometimes it hurts. and i filed that nail shorter than the rest. but it has a longer freeedge. and its like my nailbed is like peeling and when i look underneath my nail it looks as if its lifting.

Is it true that biting your nails is a mental disorder?

I am 17 nearing 18 %26amp; I have bit my nails since I was 3, sometimes real bad to the point of blood %26amp; slight skin loss on the tops of my fingers. It's noticeable ONLY if you're ACTUALLY staring at my fingertips. Not like anybody does that out in public anyways, but then again who cares about what people think about you?

My mom keeps telling me that its a metal disorder %26amp; she even sent me a website proving to me that she is correct.

I've tried the paint-on nasty tasting treatments they sell in stores %26amp; it does not work for me, I bite right though it.

I know in my mind, that I do this out of boredom %26amp; nervousness.

How can I stop this????Is it true that biting your nails is a mental disorder?
its not an illness it is however, idiosyincratic behaviour. its not a big problem and billions do it lol dont worry about it.

other types of idiosyncresses (spelling is more then likely wrong)

cracking nuckles

sighing

nose picking hahah

etc

lol so just dont worryIs it true that biting your nails is a mental disorder?
No it doesn't necessarily mean you have a mental disorder- I think that most people just do it out of agitation in certain situations... pretty bad that you've once bitten down to your fingers though! Look at it this way though it could be worse; when my brother got bored he used to pick his nose and eat its contents- sometimes i think he's got a mental ilness
Oh good grief, it's not a mental disorder

its a habit, and a comfort thing

Just watch how many girls play with their hair, it's a comfort thing

and no more, and you're harming nobody else, apart from maybe your

own skin

I'm sure most people have little habits, they do, when they are anxious or bored, but probably don't admit it,and it's all perfectly normal

We're all humans with feelings and emotions.....
Im sure it is not a mental disorder but may be caused by having some type of really bad anxiety. Dont think there gona lock you in the loony bin for it but see a therapist of some kind they may help you out with your anxiety
Are you sure you dont have hair on your hands? It is a common problem that many people dont notice the hair on their hands because it blends in so easily. Take another look!!!

Ps. Get back to me on that one
It not a metal disorder, just a bad habit. There is some stuff you can put on your nails that will taste awful if you bite them. Try that or sit on your hands.
I bite my nails and I dont have a mentall disorder. The worrying cinema shouts without the renewing detail and her pompous cassette tires our shouting bread.
No, not according to the DSM-IV, but it often co-occurs with a mental disorder.
biting your nails can cause worms. but it is not a mental disorder, dont worry.
fingernails carry over 99% of bad germs that get you sick and leave blisters in your mouth and lips over time.
If it is a mental disorder then I'm completely MAD.lol.
due to tension and nervousness
Hi, so is looking for hair in the palms of your hands. Did you look? nev r
My ex did this from childhood. I am sorry you do this, but be positive, that's the first step.

Find activities, when there are none, find something you can twiddle, like the charms on a bracelet, find any positive, non-degenerative approach.

Valerian may help, double dose for 2 weeks then maintenance dose. Take in the evening, if you go to bed at 9.30, take them at 8.30.

Let your body rest when it wants to.

Avoid caffeine, check your dietary history for products containing caffeine. (like colas)

This may sound crazy, but it is cheap and easy to try. Calcium supplement tablets; double dose first week then normal maintenance dose.

Another thing may be an anxiety disorder, like a mild phobic reaction to some common thing.

Also look into allergies.

Yes, you are correct, your Mother is deranged, lol, joke. It is not a mental disorder, but it may indicate a mild condition. Mild condition means you are lucky, do something about it now, before it ruins other aspects of your life.
No. It is not a mental disorder. It is only a habit like any other good or bad habits. It is at the most a nervous state of mind. anxious state of mind, boring state of mind, an excited state of mind. Disorder needs treatment, nail biting needs only mind training. A concerted effort not to do it. An effort to stay in present tense, as most of the time one nail bite, he is in future or past, and not aware of what he is doing. And to be glued to the past or present cannot be considered as a mental disorder until it is interfering with his life. Your mother's intention is to desist you from the practice and arises out of her affection and care for you and should be listened to. with best wishes.

Edit : If at all a medicine is required for minor correction of its nervous and anxious aspects, Aurum Triphyllatum in homeopathic doses will cure as per its symptom ';Biting of Nails till it bleeds';. If this is to be stopped at smaller ages before habit formation,Natrum Mur will help at 200C potency.

While keeping in mind these are absolutely normal habits of an abnormal behaviour; not amounting to a mental disorder.

sounds like a fungus, specially because its lifting and the weird feeling. you should get it treated because 1. you could infect the rest of your nails 2. infect some customers 3. fungi are easier to treat at first, later grow more and more resistant...

I suffer from social anxiety disorder and I always bite the skin sorrounding my finger nails, how can i stop?

wear mittens with soap residue on them. That way if you try to nibble the mitt you won't like the taste.I suffer from social anxiety disorder and I always bite the skin sorrounding my finger nails, how can i stop?
Put something on that particular finger ,it will stop u until u lose that habit.I suffer from social anxiety disorder and I always bite the skin sorrounding my finger nails, how can i stop?
Spend more time alone. Or learn to analize your social situations a little. BE aware of your breath, try to find the way to make it last. Meditation or so.
Probably you might have generalised anxiety disorder.it is diffficulkt to make a diagnosis based on your question and your interpretation of social anxiety disorder.

Some of the associated symptoms may include excessive worrying, sweating ,awareness of your heart beat, avoiding situations-like avoiding open spaces with large crowds, fear of the unknown etc.

Some forms of treatments include

Non drug treatments-Counselling to talk and discusss your fears and anxities,desensitisation-i.e graded exposure to the thing/object/situation that you fear.Desensitisation is used to treat phobias(Fears)

2) drug treatments/ medication

Benzodiazepines(Diazepam,lorazepam,alp鈥?etc)treatment%26gt;It is meant to be short term 2-4 weks treatment.Use beyond 4 weeks can lead to addicion and dependence to the drug.

3)Antidepressant medications(like citalopram etc) in a low dose are used in the management of anxiety disorders. The doses are below the requirements needed for treating depression.
when i was young i have this problem too :%26gt; my father paint the ammonia on my finger .....then i never do it again
You are experiencing mild anxiety.

If it`s not possible to stop it ASAP..try substituting nailbiting by deepbreathing or think of a quiet place whenever you are anxious.Or try positive self-talk.

I tried it when I am anxious or afraid. It`s very useful.
You seem to be asking 2 Qs, one about social anx; and about biting skin.

You can stop biting your skin by replacing this activity with another. Carry some Curel, or moisturizer with you. In the a.m., rub the ends of your fingers with lotion. During the day, when you feel like biting, rub instead.

Replenish the lotion in private, on your break, in the washroom.

Over a period of time, the skin on your fingers will heal, and the additional rubbing will smooth it out.

When you see how much improved the appearance of your fingers, this will motivate you to refrain from chewing.

The social anxiety is a deeper rooted issue, but mastering the finger-biting is a step toward greater self-confidence. Lack of confidence/shame-gone-awry is usually at the root of socio-phobic/shame affect disorders.

Maybe this is what is deep down inside? Work with a therapist on this issue; good luck.
Do visualization, write in meetings, chew gum, hard candy. Or see if antidepressants will work (it does for some).
when you figure it out please let me know
Take a anti-depressent that works for anxiety too.
I also suffer from an anxiety disorder, and most of the time when I am feeling very stressed, I tend to scratch or rub the top of my head alot, or just cover it with my hands. I have had the hardest time breaking the habit. It seems like the only way to rid yourself of biting is to confront whatever it is that drives your anxiety. If there is a large group of people that are triggering your anx, then you should try and become the center of attention. I always feel as if somthing is going terribly wrong, in my own head. All I do is confront the fact that I am making myself feel that way, and I try to contradict it by letting myself know I am still breathing and thinking and functioning. I am aware of my problem, and then I can ignore it and get back to life. But, if that fails too often, then maybe getting professional help like therapy or medication would be better. I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to mhmr drugs, so I try to tough it out. Try it on for size, and good luck
My sister did that too. You need to ask your doctor about it, and try to put something on your fingers that taste bad. The have medication for the anxiety you are experiencing. Good luck.
Hypnotherapy; it's non-invasive, no drugs, no side-ellects, it's quick, painless, and can work wonders, by ';re-programming'; your unconscious mind.
the best answer is see a doctor they can help with either counseling or medication
Cure; your; anxiety.
difficult one. Try to do something else when that happens. As soon as you feel you are going to put your fingers in your mouth , jump up and go do something else. Or you could always put hot sauce on your finger tips.
I do the same thing; eating the skin around the fingernails that is.

I have been doing so for ages now, to the point that some of my finger tips have been slightly ';deformed';; or rather it is the nails themselves who have adopted a new path of growth, making it look like my finger tips are slightly bent.

For years I've been trying to cure myself of this very nasty habit. It can actually lead to gangrene if you dig in too much and the ';wound'; gets infected. Often I would try to put polisporin (or other regenerative compound) on my fingertips before going to sleep, hoping it would heal the skin around the nails overnight. Truth is, it does help a bit but it isn't miraculous.

Stress and fear and the main factors which drive this habit of mine. Stress is everyday life; the lifestyle of the post 80s/90s in today's wireless computer internet age. Fear is basically one of those strong emotions which cannot be easily controlled. Although I literaly face my fear(s) every single day, and deal with them, I just seem to cannot stop eating that skin around my nails!

The only solution I was able to find (thanks to my wife) is actually so simple it will sound ridiculous. It is basically becoming concious of your actions as you are doing then, hence in this case, trying to stop yourself before you do. So every time I put my fingers to my mouth , I try to stop myself. It doesn't always work, but since I am more aware of what I am doing, and of course that other fear of gangrene, I have considerably toned down on this nasty habit.

Let me know if you find a more decent solution to this!

If somebody has slightly weird shaped fingers and nails is this normal or do they have a disorder?

Fingernails can often display signs of chronic health problems...one example is a ';bulbous'; appearance of the nails which can be a sign of chronic lack of oxygen such as in patients who've had lung cancer surgery, etc.

There are many different shapes that could indicate a problem...or it could fall within normal limits. In other words, not all odd shapes are indicative of serious health problems, but it might be worth checking out.If somebody has slightly weird shaped fingers and nails is this normal or do they have a disorder?
It could be normal or abnormal. A description may help

Is biting nails a sign of mental disorder?

Can mental healthy people bite their nails too? How would you consider a person biting him(her)nails? Is biting nails a sign of mental disorder?
It could be. Obsessive Compulsiveness can include any repetitive action. I constantly clip my nails and if they're longer than I like them, I get fidgety, and can't wait to clip them. This might be a sign of OCD for me, but even then its not for sure.Is biting nails a sign of mental disorder?
HEYYY I BITE MY NAILS and am fineeeeee :%26gt;
Nail biting is simply a nervous habit. I don't think it will buy you time in a state institution. biting your nails is how you rid your body of it's extra energy or anxiety.
Nail biting is often a sign of anxiety and/or insecurity - and it's also a vice.

But the nail biting alone isn't a mental disorder.

However, people with mental disorders can bite their nails, why not?
I dont know I guess it would be if you cant stop your self.....I constantly bite mines.....so I guess then I would have one....if that is true !!!!!
I hope this helps
I bite my nails just when they et long because I dont ever have nail clippers.
It's just a habit, it doesn't mean someone is mentally ill...
healthy people dod not do this-you must be crazy
lol god i hope not.

no its just a habit some people have
No, only when you start including those bitten off nails in recipes do you need to perhaps go talk to someone.
Well I know that I am not retarded so yes it is completely normal for mentally healthy people to bite their nails. I had a habit of biting my nails all the time and i eventually started putting fingernail polish remover or something that tasted really bad on the tips of my fingers so every time id go to bite my nails id get the taste in my mouth. Eventually I stopped biting my nails. Most of the time when i bit my nails i was nervous because I have anxiety problems.
No, biting your nails is a nervous habbit. It's usually a form of comfort for toddlers. Most children stop biting their nails at some point. Though a small percentage countinue it into their teens, and some even do it untill they are adults. It isn't a sign of mental disorder, it's just something you never stopped doing. It doesnt cause any problems either. Though a lot of people see it as a bad habbit.
No, itchy fingers or nails.

Keep a nail file handy, and keep then smooth and neat. Then they feel nice and you are less likely to pick at them or bite them.
NO, just means the person is nervous. I don't like hanging out with persons who bite their nails - not because they're nervous, but because I don't think it's hygienic.
No. However it is usually a sign of anxiety. It's also just a very bad habbit. Make yourself break it. Paint that nasty tasting stuff on your nails to keep them out of your mouth. It really works.
No, it's not a sign of a mental disorder or we would all be nuts.
no.

I bite my nails and i'm perfectly normal. i think biting nails is more of a habit people acquire over years. in the beginning, i would do it when i felt bored, then i began to like the feeling on my teeth while biting. after some time, i couldn't tolerate the feeling of longish nails. the more nail there is, the more pleasure in biting. i guess i don't mind doing it myself, but if i saw somebody doing it in public, i wouldnt like it much.

therefore, biting nails is not a sign of mental disorder, and it's perfectly normal to bite nails (it's not a very good habit, though)
Simply-Nervousness
  • great wear
  • Square, wide nails caused by hormonal disorder?

After getting out of the shower, my nails looked wide and squared. Is this normal? Whats the cause?Square, wide nails caused by hormonal disorder?
Yeah, its normal. you probably take hot showers, which can cause the nails to retract from the skin a little.

    hope this helps.

Does biting my nails have something to do with my anxiety disorder or my OCD?

no matter how hard i try, i cannot stop biting them. i bite the skin around them til they bleed and i have to put bandaids on them. i have tried every nail polish that is supposed to make me stop biting them, and nothing works. i read that it could be a symptom of anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder, and i have both of them.Does biting my nails have something to do with my anxiety disorder or my OCD?
biting your nails could very much so be a compulsive behavior that someone with OCD could engage in.

If you've already been diagnosed with OCD and with an anxiety disorder, I suggest discussing it with your doctor if your nails are becoming a serious issue.Does biting my nails have something to do with my anxiety disorder or my OCD?
You answered your own question in the comments you provided us with? I believe you are trying to get people's attention (increasingly becoming the norm in our depressed societies) but, well, look for help if you feel you need it.

    :o) Best of luck!
I don't believe excessive nail biting is a symptom of OCD. It can be boredom, stress related, diet, or a vitamin deficiency. Check with your doctor about it.
Go talk to your Dr. It sounds like your medication is not controlling your problem. Nailbiting is a common occurrence in anxiety and OCD
It can definitely be an expression of anxiety and I swear those kind of habits are the hardest to break because it's so easy to do it without even thinking...I mean, it's your hands and they are always right there!

';Liberalism is a mental disorder'; Did Michael Savage hit the nail on the head or WHAT?!?

T shirts with this slogan are available at his website, www.michaelsavage.com. All TRUE Americans would be proud to wear one... John Wayne would have!';Liberalism is a mental disorder'; Did Michael Savage hit the nail on the head or WHAT?!?
I read that book too, Pilgrim. Don't let these peoples dictionary explanation of ';Liberal'; deceive you. We know what a Liberal is, and it's not described in the dictionary. We know that liberalism originates from angry people - simply angry by nature, and looking for something to focus that anger on. Even to the point of demoralizing and endangering their own country.';Liberalism is a mental disorder'; Did Michael Savage hit the nail on the head or WHAT?!?
    If the Duke were alive today he would tell you that it's ';Time to find a relevant ';Hero'; there Pilgrim!!';
    What is about right?

Can't you pick someone who is at least alive before you decide that your delusion would be his?
Savage, like all of the right wing radio nitwits have managed to re-define the world 'liberal' and the concept of 'liberalism' into an all purpose pejoritive noun. It's something like redefining the world 'truth' to mean propaganda. I feel sorry for the ditto-heads for allowing themselves to fall into this trap of screwball belief. The alternative to a 'liberal' society, liberal as defined by any standard dictionary, is to enter a world based on superstition, deception, rule by force, hate, ignorance and a dark age of all against all. Michael Savage has hit the nail all right....right on the...point. Look up the word liberalism in the dictionary and embrace it.....civilization in the best sense of the word will be lost without it!
mike savage is a mental disorder. just listen to him say how medical marijuana is a scam?????? wtf?
John Wayne would be one of the last people to put on such a silly slogan. True Americans are free thinkers that don't follow slogans or trends.
Exactly what do you think ';liberalism'; means??Here's how my Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines ';liberalism';: A THEORY IN ECONOMICS EMPHASIZING INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM FROM RESTRAINT AND...BASED ON FREE COMPETITION, THE SELF-REGULATING MARKET, AND THE GOLD STANDARD.

-or- A POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY BASED ON BELIEF IN PROGRESS, THE ESSENTIAL GOODNESS OF MAN, AND THE AUTONOMY OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND STANDING FOR THE PROTECTION OF POLITICAL AND CIVIL LIBERTIES.

In the same dictionary, by the way, ';conservatism'; is defined as A POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY BASED ON TRADITION AND SOCIAL STABILITY, STRESSING ESTABLISHED INSTITUTIONS AND PREFERRING GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT TO ABRUPT CHANGE; THE TENDENCY TO PREFER AN EXISTING SITUATION.

So, from my perspective, a conservative might be the one with a mental disorder, afraid of change or improvement and sticking to the 'staus quo', regardless of how untimely or outmoded such tradition might be. A liberal, on the other hand, appears to open to fresh ideas, optimistic toward new solutions to age-old problems, and enough of a progressive thinker to know that change is necessary and inevitable to maintain a free and prosperous society.

It seems that liberals would like more people to share the wealth and enjoy the benefits of our free America while conservatives believe in an ';All for one...ME'; philosophy that restricts and excludes the majority of Americans in sharing this nation's bounty.

If I weren't such a staunch independent who abhors BOTH the liberal and conservative persuasions, I'd definitely be drawn to liberalism instead of that 'wacko' conservative agenda put forth by stubborn, unchangeable ditto heads.

    -RKO- 08/19/07
    or what.

john wayne would have but thomas jefferson, james madison, john jay, and alexander hamilton wouldn't.
I'll wear that shirt one day, my ';Godless: The Church of Liberalism'; shirt the next day, and then my ';We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity'; shirt the day after that.
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, AMEN 100 PER CENT....GREAT QUESTION...DEAD ON.
    It's very true!

Any group that would be okay with killing a baby, but saving a dog truly has a BIG mental disorder.
Liberalism is the larger theory of citizen participation in government, protected rights and freedoms guaranteed by a constitution, and forms the basis for conservative values.

Liberalism is the foundation of everything Michael Savage uses to gain celebrity and sell books. He should have said ';Militant extremism of any KIND is a mental disorder'; which is something he qualifies as; an extremist with a militant ideology.

As part of your further education, perhaps you should do a little research on what conservatism is. It is in fact what liberalism used to mean. Modern liberalism means progressivism, either social, economic, or political reform of a certain kind.

Much of conservatism is similar to libertarianism, which is what old school liberalism meant. You can't bash the entire ideology of liberalism, because that includes conservatism and libertarianism.

It is as though doctor Savage considers liberalism and conservatism to be two ultimate extremes. This is wrong, the extremes are anarchy and totalitarianism. Liberalism and conservatism are two different flavors of moderate political ideology, and I am saddened to see those of us who should be more mature and tolerant denigrate and demonize one another for choosing slightly different political views.

Instead of focusing on our differences, as partisan hacks would like you to do, focus on our common values and our shared strengths. Tearing this nation apart and blaming the other half does nothing. Meanwhile, other nations are making political, economic, and social progress, while we bash each other.

Time to take a grow up pill.
Quite conveniently, John Wayne and Jefferson are dead, and can't argue with that. Neither can Kennedy either, who conservatives sometimes claim would be a Republican today. This post is a load of claptrap which would not convince anyone but a kindergartner of anything.
Given that the US constitution and American society is based on Liberalism, I couldn't agree more.

Can nail biting be a disorder?

if done compulsively or to cause pain. Or it can be a symptom of a bigger anxiety problem - I guess it depends on what the spirit behind it is... if you're doing it out of bordom then it's prolly just a habit, if you do when your nervous it could be compulsive or anxiety, if you do it to cause pain it's a form of self injuryCan nail biting be a disorder?
Not officially, no it isn't. But a doctor might consider it a part of OCD, an Impulse-Control Disorder, Stereotypic Movement Disorder, or some other mental illness depending on the person and how severe it is.

That's kind of funny, though, because there is an actual diagnosis called Trichotillomania; which is compulsive hair plucking, but nail biting doesn't have it's own category. Can nail biting be a disorder?
i dont think so but its really disgusting
I guess it depends on the extent of your nail biting.

At least its not as unhygenic as chewing the skin of your feet which I have seen my friends do
Pls refer to link below and its references

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nail_biting
i dont thinks so it is just a way to relieve some stress
    No,just a nervous habit,a tick..ext.
I bit my nails because I had horrible anxiety. Once I got on medication, I stopped biting my nails.

    Is nail biting a disorder?

i bite my nails a lot, and i was reading something on wikipedia, and i just wanted to know if it was a disorder or not.Is nail biting a disorder?
It is not. Biting your nails is simply a habit that most people consider gross. Theres nothing that makes it a disorder in any way. Your brain is simply trained to do it, just like swinging your arms like running. If you try hard enough, you don't do it.

What is that anxiety disorder when you bite your finger nail?

i'm not understanding the question fully ... everyone has stress some people can deal with that stress more efficently than others. The people who can't deal with that stress tend to show signs in their actions and bodily responses that the stress is overwhelming. So someone who bites their nails isn't necessarily suffering from GAD but it's likely that someone who has ulcers, bites their nails, twists their hair and taps their foot is someone who is suffereing from anxiety disorder. If my explanation did not help here is wikipedia's ....

nxiety disorder is a blanket term covering several different forms of abnormal, pathological anxiety, fears, phobias and nervous conditions that may come on suddenly or gradually over a period of several years, and may impair or prevent the pursuing of normal daily routines.

Anxiety and fear are ubiquitous emotions. The terms anxiety and fear have specific scientific meanings, but common usage has made them interchangeable. For example, a phobia is a kind of anxiety that is also defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV-TR) as a ';persistent or irrational fear.'; Fear is defined as an emotional and physiological response to a recognized external threat (eg, a runaway car or an impending crash in an airplane). Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state, the sources of which are less readily identified. It is frequently accompanied by physiological symptoms that may lead to fatigue or even exhaustion. Because fear of recognized threats causes similar unpleasant mental and physical changes, patients use the terms fear and anxiety interchangeably. Thus, there is little need to strive to differentiate anxiety from fear. However, distinguishing among different anxiety disorders is important, since accurate diagnosis is more likely to result in effective treatment and a better prognosis. What is that anxiety disorder when you bite your finger nail?
It may start as stress and them it becomes a habit

Leukonychia - Causes, Treatment and Prevention

Leukonychia is the white spotting seen in nails, streaking, or discoloration of the fingernails, which is mainly caused due to a result from arsenic poisoning, injury, heart disease, renal failure, pneumonia, ill health or hypoalbuminemia.

Several nail disorders are there which come from hereditary or it may be acquired. Leuconychia is one of them. Leukonychia may be total, partial, striate or punctate. Leukonychia totalis is a very rare case. Hereditary or congenital leukonychia, is present since birth, with positive family history and has autosomal dominant inheritance. Acquired leukonychia totalis appears in early childhood.

    Causes of Leuconychia

Some other causes of leukonychia except from those said above may be:

    * Leprosy.

    * Exposure to extreme cold.

    * Hepatic Cirrhosis.

    * Ulcerative Colitis.

    * Onychophagia.

    * Psychogenic Stresses.

    * Anemia.

    * Hypoproteinemia.

    * Occupational trauma.

    * A crush injury to base of the nail or the nail bed may produce a permanent deformity.

    * Vitamin deficiency can cause a loss of luster or brittle nails.

Some Impotant points (FAQ'S) about Leukonychia

Q: Is it a sign of lack of calcium or some other vitamin from my diet?

A: No, it is'nt a sign of lack of calcium or any other vitamin from your diet. It mainly occurs due to any injury or ill health.

    Q: Is Leukonychia harmful?

A: No, it is completely harmless.

Q: Where is it more common? In fingernails or toenails?

A: It is much more common in fingernails than in toenails.

    Treatment and Prevention of Leukonychia

There is no treatment for leuconychia as such. The white marks will dissapear on their own, when the nails will grow outwards. Reducing minor injury to the nails may prevent the white marks.

Leuconychia changes the color of your nails. If you have to go in some party, then for temporary purposes you may use nail polish on your nails to hide these white marks. But dont use nail polish on your nails frequently as this will worsen the condition by causing allergic reaction in the surrounding skin and which may damage the nails.

Green leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts and should be consumed in daily routine so that there is no deficiency of zinc in your body - which are associated with the appearance of white spots.Nail disorder?
Believe it or Not, Embalming Fluid Works.
What are the signs or symptoms of a nail fungus infection?

A: You may see, smell, or feel a nail fungus infection once it takes hold.

Nails may look brownish, yellowish, or have little white patches. Some may even be brown or black.

Nails may get flaky, brittle, and chipped.

Bits of ';gunk'; or debris may collect under your nails.

    Your nails may smell bad.

Toenails may get so thick that wearing shoes causes pain.

Discomfort from the infection may make it hard to walk, work, or do other activities.

These symptoms may not get better. In fact, if nail fungus infections are not treated, they may get worse.

Q: How are nail fungus infections diagnosed?

A: First, your healthcare provider will look closely at your nails. If your healthcare provider thinks you have nail fungus, he or she may perform a test. Your healthcare provider may clip off a small piece of your nail so that it can be examined. It may be examined in the office or sent out to a lab. This is the only way to know if you really have nail fungus.

What are the treatment choices for nail fungus infections?

A: Your healthcare provider can prescribe medicine for your fungal infection that you take by mouth. Treatment lasts 12 weeks. This medicine travels through your bloodstream to reach the fungus where it lives deep under the nail in your nail bed.

A prescription polish is also available. It must be applied to the infected nail daily for up to 48 weeks.

To find out if one of these medications is right for you, talk with your healthcare provider.

Some people use products not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for nail fungus infections, such as over-the-counter creams, lotions, and polishes from a drugstore or pharmacy. Others use home remedies, such as vinegar or other solutions. But these products may not work very well because they don't reach the fungus where it lives under the nail.

Q: Should I see a healthcare professional to treat my nail fungus infection?

A: A nail fungus infection is a medical condition that often will not go away without treatment. It can keep getting worse. It may spread from one nail to another, or to someone else. If you think you have an infection, your healthcare provider can diagnose nail fungus infection and help you decide how to treat it.

Here are some other reasons you may want to talk to a healthcare professional:

    Your nails鈥攅specially toenails鈥攎ay hurt.

Nail fungus infection can lead to other medical problems for people with circulation problems in their feet and/or people with diabetes.

You may feel embarrassed by the way the fungus has made your nails look.

Speak to your primary care physician, podiatrist, dermatologist, or healthcare professional before the condition of your nails gets worse.

Q: Why is it even more important for people with diabetes to treat nail fungus infection?

A: People with diabetes are nearly three times more likely to get nail fungus infection as people without diabetes*. Because people with diabetes have circulation problems, left untreated, the infection can often lead to more severe health problems on the foot.

If you have diabetes, check your feet and nails regularly for changes in their appearance. If you spot something, be sure and tell your primary care physician, podiatrist, dermatologist, or healthcare professional about it right away. Any type of infection can be more serious in a person with diabetes.

Q: What can I do to keep my nails healthy while I'm treating the infection?

A: Take these steps while you are being treated and afterwards to take care of your nails. You might want to share these tips with people close to you.

Keep your feet as clean and dry as possible.

Wear shoes that ';breathe,'; such as canvas or leather shoes.

Wear shower shoes when you're in public swimming pools, public showers, or locker rooms.

    Clip your toenails straight across.

Wear comfortable shoes that fit properly and don't pinch your toes.

If you get manicures or pedicures, make sure your salon follows the rules for cleanliness. States require that nail salons be licensed and follow strict health rules. Salons must sterilize instruments and footbaths. Licenses must be posted so customers know the salon has been inspected.

    What is a nail disorder?

And why would it stop you working.

It's an excuse used by people who are screwing the system. What is a nail disorder?
It could be an ingrowing toe-nail gone septic. Then the person in question would find it hard to walk and it would be very painful! I have known people with this disorder and had to take antibiotics to kill the infection. If the toe-nail keeps growing into the flesh then an operation has to be done to sort out the offending toe-nail. This is known as a wedge resection and is painful soon after the procedure has been

been performed. So it could stop you working a day or two after the operation.
I thought a nail disorder was when you bent it hammering it in...
Some people will do or say anything not to work.
Broken finger nail, yep, that would do it! I know a man who gets an extra 30quid a week because he drinks too much, lol. Its so he can buy more drink and stay just the way he is.

Makes you sick really, my supervisor's husband has just had his incapacity benefit stopped even though he is off work after an industrial injury and has his badly broken foot in a cast again after several operations to fix it! He was only claiming incapacity because he has been off for so long he can no onger get sick pay - it seems it is always genuine claimants who get a raw deal.
