Strange thumb nail disorder?

Ever since I was about in the 4th grade my left my left thumb nail has a strange indentation of bumbs and ridges in the middle of it that runs from bottom to top. It grew completley out once but came back shortly and has been there ever since. I am 31 now. My mom had them before but hers grew out. My brother also has them. Its obviously something hereditary but what and can I ever get rid of it?Strange thumb nail disorder?
i believe it is caused by a fungusStrange thumb nail disorder?
It could be a vitamin B deficiency, sometimes it causes ridges in your nail (s) so check that out.

Do i have a nail disease/disorder?

i go to boces for Cosmetology. and were on the nail unit (i wish i had my book with me) but...

my thumbnail is been weird lately. it started like a month ago. but its like warm sometimes. and sometimes it hurts. and i filed that nail shorter than the rest. but it has a longer freeedge. and its like my nailbed is like peeling and when i look underneath my nail it looks as if its lifting.

Is it true that biting your nails is a mental disorder?

I am 17 nearing 18 %26amp; I have bit my nails since I was 3, sometimes real bad to the point of blood %26amp; slight skin loss on the tops of my fingers. It's noticeable ONLY if you're ACTUALLY staring at my fingertips. Not like anybody does that out in public anyways, but then again who cares about what people think about you?

My mom keeps telling me that its a metal disorder %26amp; she even sent me a website proving to me that she is correct.

I've tried the paint-on nasty tasting treatments they sell in stores %26amp; it does not work for me, I bite right though it.

I know in my mind, that I do this out of boredom %26amp; nervousness.

How can I stop this????Is it true that biting your nails is a mental disorder?
its not an illness it is however, idiosyincratic behaviour. its not a big problem and billions do it lol dont worry about it.

other types of idiosyncresses (spelling is more then likely wrong)

cracking nuckles

sighing

nose picking hahah

etc

lol so just dont worryIs it true that biting your nails is a mental disorder?
No it doesn't necessarily mean you have a mental disorder- I think that most people just do it out of agitation in certain situations... pretty bad that you've once bitten down to your fingers though! Look at it this way though it could be worse; when my brother got bored he used to pick his nose and eat its contents- sometimes i think he's got a mental ilness
Oh good grief, it's not a mental disorder

its a habit, and a comfort thing

Just watch how many girls play with their hair, it's a comfort thing

and no more, and you're harming nobody else, apart from maybe your

own skin

I'm sure most people have little habits, they do, when they are anxious or bored, but probably don't admit it,and it's all perfectly normal

We're all humans with feelings and emotions.....
Im sure it is not a mental disorder but may be caused by having some type of really bad anxiety. Dont think there gona lock you in the loony bin for it but see a therapist of some kind they may help you out with your anxiety
Are you sure you dont have hair on your hands? It is a common problem that many people dont notice the hair on their hands because it blends in so easily. Take another look!!!

Ps. Get back to me on that one
It not a metal disorder, just a bad habit. There is some stuff you can put on your nails that will taste awful if you bite them. Try that or sit on your hands.
I bite my nails and I dont have a mentall disorder. The worrying cinema shouts without the renewing detail and her pompous cassette tires our shouting bread.
No, not according to the DSM-IV, but it often co-occurs with a mental disorder.
biting your nails can cause worms. but it is not a mental disorder, dont worry.
fingernails carry over 99% of bad germs that get you sick and leave blisters in your mouth and lips over time.
If it is a mental disorder then I'm completely MAD.lol.
due to tension and nervousness
Hi, so is looking for hair in the palms of your hands. Did you look? nev r
My ex did this from childhood. I am sorry you do this, but be positive, that's the first step.

Find activities, when there are none, find something you can twiddle, like the charms on a bracelet, find any positive, non-degenerative approach.

Valerian may help, double dose for 2 weeks then maintenance dose. Take in the evening, if you go to bed at 9.30, take them at 8.30.

Let your body rest when it wants to.

Avoid caffeine, check your dietary history for products containing caffeine. (like colas)

This may sound crazy, but it is cheap and easy to try. Calcium supplement tablets; double dose first week then normal maintenance dose.

Another thing may be an anxiety disorder, like a mild phobic reaction to some common thing.

Also look into allergies.

Yes, you are correct, your Mother is deranged, lol, joke. It is not a mental disorder, but it may indicate a mild condition. Mild condition means you are lucky, do something about it now, before it ruins other aspects of your life.
No. It is not a mental disorder. It is only a habit like any other good or bad habits. It is at the most a nervous state of mind. anxious state of mind, boring state of mind, an excited state of mind. Disorder needs treatment, nail biting needs only mind training. A concerted effort not to do it. An effort to stay in present tense, as most of the time one nail bite, he is in future or past, and not aware of what he is doing. And to be glued to the past or present cannot be considered as a mental disorder until it is interfering with his life. Your mother's intention is to desist you from the practice and arises out of her affection and care for you and should be listened to. with best wishes.

Edit : If at all a medicine is required for minor correction of its nervous and anxious aspects, Aurum Triphyllatum in homeopathic doses will cure as per its symptom ';Biting of Nails till it bleeds';. If this is to be stopped at smaller ages before habit formation,Natrum Mur will help at 200C potency.

While keeping in mind these are absolutely normal habits of an abnormal behaviour; not amounting to a mental disorder.

sounds like a fungus, specially because its lifting and the weird feeling. you should get it treated because 1. you could infect the rest of your nails 2. infect some customers 3. fungi are easier to treat at first, later grow more and more resistant...

I suffer from social anxiety disorder and I always bite the skin sorrounding my finger nails, how can i stop?

wear mittens with soap residue on them. That way if you try to nibble the mitt you won't like the taste.I suffer from social anxiety disorder and I always bite the skin sorrounding my finger nails, how can i stop?
Put something on that particular finger ,it will stop u until u lose that habit.I suffer from social anxiety disorder and I always bite the skin sorrounding my finger nails, how can i stop?
Spend more time alone. Or learn to analize your social situations a little. BE aware of your breath, try to find the way to make it last. Meditation or so.
Probably you might have generalised anxiety disorder.it is diffficulkt to make a diagnosis based on your question and your interpretation of social anxiety disorder.

Some of the associated symptoms may include excessive worrying, sweating ,awareness of your heart beat, avoiding situations-like avoiding open spaces with large crowds, fear of the unknown etc.

Some forms of treatments include

Non drug treatments-Counselling to talk and discusss your fears and anxities,desensitisation-i.e graded exposure to the thing/object/situation that you fear.Desensitisation is used to treat phobias(Fears)

2) drug treatments/ medication

Benzodiazepines(Diazepam,lorazepam,alp鈥?etc)treatment%26gt;It is meant to be short term 2-4 weks treatment.Use beyond 4 weeks can lead to addicion and dependence to the drug.

3)Antidepressant medications(like citalopram etc) in a low dose are used in the management of anxiety disorders. The doses are below the requirements needed for treating depression.
when i was young i have this problem too :%26gt; my father paint the ammonia on my finger .....then i never do it again
You are experiencing mild anxiety.

If it`s not possible to stop it ASAP..try substituting nailbiting by deepbreathing or think of a quiet place whenever you are anxious.Or try positive self-talk.

I tried it when I am anxious or afraid. It`s very useful.
You seem to be asking 2 Qs, one about social anx; and about biting skin.

You can stop biting your skin by replacing this activity with another. Carry some Curel, or moisturizer with you. In the a.m., rub the ends of your fingers with lotion. During the day, when you feel like biting, rub instead.

Replenish the lotion in private, on your break, in the washroom.

Over a period of time, the skin on your fingers will heal, and the additional rubbing will smooth it out.

When you see how much improved the appearance of your fingers, this will motivate you to refrain from chewing.

The social anxiety is a deeper rooted issue, but mastering the finger-biting is a step toward greater self-confidence. Lack of confidence/shame-gone-awry is usually at the root of socio-phobic/shame affect disorders.

Maybe this is what is deep down inside? Work with a therapist on this issue; good luck.
Do visualization, write in meetings, chew gum, hard candy. Or see if antidepressants will work (it does for some).
when you figure it out please let me know
Take a anti-depressent that works for anxiety too.
I also suffer from an anxiety disorder, and most of the time when I am feeling very stressed, I tend to scratch or rub the top of my head alot, or just cover it with my hands. I have had the hardest time breaking the habit. It seems like the only way to rid yourself of biting is to confront whatever it is that drives your anxiety. If there is a large group of people that are triggering your anx, then you should try and become the center of attention. I always feel as if somthing is going terribly wrong, in my own head. All I do is confront the fact that I am making myself feel that way, and I try to contradict it by letting myself know I am still breathing and thinking and functioning. I am aware of my problem, and then I can ignore it and get back to life. But, if that fails too often, then maybe getting professional help like therapy or medication would be better. I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to mhmr drugs, so I try to tough it out. Try it on for size, and good luck
My sister did that too. You need to ask your doctor about it, and try to put something on your fingers that taste bad. The have medication for the anxiety you are experiencing. Good luck.
Hypnotherapy; it's non-invasive, no drugs, no side-ellects, it's quick, painless, and can work wonders, by ';re-programming'; your unconscious mind.
the best answer is see a doctor they can help with either counseling or medication
Cure; your; anxiety.
difficult one. Try to do something else when that happens. As soon as you feel you are going to put your fingers in your mouth , jump up and go do something else. Or you could always put hot sauce on your finger tips.
I do the same thing; eating the skin around the fingernails that is.

I have been doing so for ages now, to the point that some of my finger tips have been slightly ';deformed';; or rather it is the nails themselves who have adopted a new path of growth, making it look like my finger tips are slightly bent.

For years I've been trying to cure myself of this very nasty habit. It can actually lead to gangrene if you dig in too much and the ';wound'; gets infected. Often I would try to put polisporin (or other regenerative compound) on my fingertips before going to sleep, hoping it would heal the skin around the nails overnight. Truth is, it does help a bit but it isn't miraculous.

Stress and fear and the main factors which drive this habit of mine. Stress is everyday life; the lifestyle of the post 80s/90s in today's wireless computer internet age. Fear is basically one of those strong emotions which cannot be easily controlled. Although I literaly face my fear(s) every single day, and deal with them, I just seem to cannot stop eating that skin around my nails!

The only solution I was able to find (thanks to my wife) is actually so simple it will sound ridiculous. It is basically becoming concious of your actions as you are doing then, hence in this case, trying to stop yourself before you do. So every time I put my fingers to my mouth , I try to stop myself. It doesn't always work, but since I am more aware of what I am doing, and of course that other fear of gangrene, I have considerably toned down on this nasty habit.

Let me know if you find a more decent solution to this!

If somebody has slightly weird shaped fingers and nails is this normal or do they have a disorder?

Fingernails can often display signs of chronic health problems...one example is a ';bulbous'; appearance of the nails which can be a sign of chronic lack of oxygen such as in patients who've had lung cancer surgery, etc.

There are many different shapes that could indicate a problem...or it could fall within normal limits. In other words, not all odd shapes are indicative of serious health problems, but it might be worth checking out.If somebody has slightly weird shaped fingers and nails is this normal or do they have a disorder?
It could be normal or abnormal. A description may help

Is biting nails a sign of mental disorder?

Can mental healthy people bite their nails too? How would you consider a person biting him(her)nails? Is biting nails a sign of mental disorder?
It could be. Obsessive Compulsiveness can include any repetitive action. I constantly clip my nails and if they're longer than I like them, I get fidgety, and can't wait to clip them. This might be a sign of OCD for me, but even then its not for sure.Is biting nails a sign of mental disorder?
HEYYY I BITE MY NAILS and am fineeeeee :%26gt;
Nail biting is simply a nervous habit. I don't think it will buy you time in a state institution. biting your nails is how you rid your body of it's extra energy or anxiety.
Nail biting is often a sign of anxiety and/or insecurity - and it's also a vice.

But the nail biting alone isn't a mental disorder.

However, people with mental disorders can bite their nails, why not?
I dont know I guess it would be if you cant stop your self.....I constantly bite mines.....so I guess then I would have one....if that is true !!!!!
I hope this helps
I bite my nails just when they et long because I dont ever have nail clippers.
It's just a habit, it doesn't mean someone is mentally ill...
healthy people dod not do this-you must be crazy
lol god i hope not.

no its just a habit some people have
No, only when you start including those bitten off nails in recipes do you need to perhaps go talk to someone.
Well I know that I am not retarded so yes it is completely normal for mentally healthy people to bite their nails. I had a habit of biting my nails all the time and i eventually started putting fingernail polish remover or something that tasted really bad on the tips of my fingers so every time id go to bite my nails id get the taste in my mouth. Eventually I stopped biting my nails. Most of the time when i bit my nails i was nervous because I have anxiety problems.
No, biting your nails is a nervous habbit. It's usually a form of comfort for toddlers. Most children stop biting their nails at some point. Though a small percentage countinue it into their teens, and some even do it untill they are adults. It isn't a sign of mental disorder, it's just something you never stopped doing. It doesnt cause any problems either. Though a lot of people see it as a bad habbit.
No, itchy fingers or nails.

Keep a nail file handy, and keep then smooth and neat. Then they feel nice and you are less likely to pick at them or bite them.
NO, just means the person is nervous. I don't like hanging out with persons who bite their nails - not because they're nervous, but because I don't think it's hygienic.
No. However it is usually a sign of anxiety. It's also just a very bad habbit. Make yourself break it. Paint that nasty tasting stuff on your nails to keep them out of your mouth. It really works.
No, it's not a sign of a mental disorder or we would all be nuts.
no.

I bite my nails and i'm perfectly normal. i think biting nails is more of a habit people acquire over years. in the beginning, i would do it when i felt bored, then i began to like the feeling on my teeth while biting. after some time, i couldn't tolerate the feeling of longish nails. the more nail there is, the more pleasure in biting. i guess i don't mind doing it myself, but if i saw somebody doing it in public, i wouldnt like it much.

therefore, biting nails is not a sign of mental disorder, and it's perfectly normal to bite nails (it's not a very good habit, though)
